WHAT IF ........?
We live in a turbulent, fast moving, ever changing, crime ridden, society where the happening of an unexpected event can change OUR circumstances in the blink of an eye ... regardless of OUR financial status,
Yet many of us are dangerously complacent.
We think that because we may have a good job, indeed just 'a job', or own a business, and have a few bucks stashed away, we are invincible. Most of us make very little effort to build more than one source of income so when something untoward does happen ... a possibility more likely than one might imagine ... we may suddenly find ourselves in a situation where we are no longer able to financially service the lifestyle to which we have become accustomed.
Sometimes the elaborate financial and insurance plans, made at mind numbing cost, to cover 'any eventuality' are rendered irrelevant when, for real or imagined legal impediments, financial institutions and insurance companies reject claims made ... to remedy a situation we assume is covered or to avoid claims against us by other parties ... with the tried and tested refrain " We're rejecting your clain because blah, blah, blah, ... but you are welcome to SUE US, it's your 'LEGAL RIGHT!!!'".
Yeah, RIGHT!!!!. Soon we discover that 'rights' are limited to what we can afford. Both in TIME (like YEARS!!!!) and MONEY (like we did not know existed in the whole world - usually payable up-front).
Suddenly there may be exposure to legal, medical, and other expenses never anticipated or provided for. Worse still, one may be permanently deprived of skills or the use of faculties .... mobility, eyesight, limbs, speech, mental capacity ... which may be essential to our income generating ability. Some people who are reading this will know ... from bitter experience ... exactly what we are talking about.
Frequently the criminal or other entity, responsible for a our distress, is in no position to make good our loss, leaving us, the victim, to sort out our life ...often with little or no support.
That can be a devastating, soul-destroying and very lonely place to find ourselves!
All or Nothing.
With the demise of communism, the competative, capitalist/democracy form of government and community structure remains as the only one considered viable today. Free enterprise, free market, the American dream, the sky is the limit, everyone has equal opportunity... it sounds so wonderful, doesn't it?
A brief look at the truth reveals that capitalism and democracy has not provided the freedom or a quality of life worth getting excited about for the vast majority of the world's populations. It should, but it has not!
Why?
Worldwide this system is patently devoid of morality, driven by unbridled greed ... and endorsed by the notion that if you have been blessed with greater ability than someone else, you deserve more. Frequently even 'ability' is not essential ... just BEEing 'well connected' can put you in the pound seats. So the rich get richer, the poor get poorer and those in the middle are struggling not to slide down to join the poor ... that long suffering majority, which comprises fully three quarters of the world population, who live in some measure of social or financial poverty. Or both.
To be sure, if you are one of the fortunate few who have accumulated exceptional wealth ... by fair means or foul ... life in a capitalist democracy can be idyllic. Especially if you have no conscience!
Every year a whole new crop of bright-eyed youngsters, matriculants, graduates, are disgorged from all segments of the educational system ... schools, colleges, technicons, universities ... and begin the often soul destroying struggle to find what the last ten or more years of their lives have supposedly prepared them for ... getting a job.
Every job offer is chased down by a horde of hopefulls. For each job offered only one can be successful. For him or her it is like winning the lottery .... literally!. Suddenly banks are hovering around offering credit cards, loans to buy cars, homes and all the other good stuff that 'earning a salary' can buy ... wagered on the perceived security of 'the job'. Like kids in candy store many newly employed avail themselves of these tantalizing offers and obligingly get locked into the life-long misery of debt.
Meanwhile the hoard who did not get the job continue their search. For them the good life does not exist. No loans, no car, no fun goodies,... and no one gives s**t. Exactly how will they survive ... eat, pay rent, get around, clothe themselves, enjoy even a modicum of dignity? That's their problem, right? Luckily, for some, there is the support of their family and friends. For the rest ... SPCP? What's that? . Society for Prevention of Cruelty to People. But there's no such thing. Exactly!
Little wonder that there is so much misery out there and crime is on the rise.
Is there a solution?
