By now most everyone has heard of Joanne Rowlings.
Joanne, a recently divorced single MOM, found herself sharing a bed-sitter in Edinburgh, Scotland, with her little girl. Money was scarce and to supplement her meager earnings Joanne entertained the idea of applying about the only skill she had... writing stories...to generate some extra income. Turning her idea into action it took her two long years of scribbling, and typing out her story on a battered old manual typewriter, at every opportunity to complete her first manuscript. Young Harry Potter was about to venture out from between the covers of a book to explore ... in the minds of a great many readers...a fantasy world created in Joanne's fertile imagination. Her thoughts had almost become reality. It remained only to take it to the next stage: find a literary agent to favourably review her manuscript and one bold enough to present it to a publisher. For another long and tedious year Joanne presented her creation to countless literary agents.
They ALL turned her down!!!!
Yet Joanne persevered until eventually she found Christopher Little, a literary agent who saw some merit in her book and agreed to present it to his contacts in the publishing world. Bloomsbury Publishers also thought the story might have limited appeal and undertook to spend a little money on promotion to see if there was any response from the Sheeple. Just one thousand copies of the first edition were printed.
Whooosh, like a forest fire, it just took off!!!
The Sheeple loved it, some no doubt spurred on by a big dollop of escapism, and the positive comments from the media, radio reviews, and friends who passed on the word. Even in far off South Africa some radio hosts spent hours, even weeks disecting every second word of her book ... ad nauseam.
Word of mouth promotion from a satisfied customer is as good as it gets for any product or service.
The rest, as they say, is history. Today Joanne has a bank account swollen with some 200 million pounds sterling. Over 100 million readers have shared Harry Potters adventures and bought a slew of Harry Potter movies and other merchandise. Just imagine....a book about a boy growing up in a fantasy world has sucked about Two Billion pounds out of the pockets of adoring fans worldwide. (Authors usually get about 10% royalty on the bookstore price of a book)
All this within five years! Does this sound ...Too good to be true?? YES, but it is ...true!
For Joanne survival mode where every penny counted ...and the bedsitter... are just a distant memory.
So, what was it that took Joanne from a bedsitter and poverty to mansion and fabulous wealth?
It was ME.....the MULTIPLIER EFFECT....which may be defined as....
The Financial Reward...for EFFORT made ONCE...duplicated/multiplied many times.

Well, it is interesting to note that Joanne started with almost NO MONEY, knew next to nothing about finance or marketing and did not seek a remedy for her situation from a bank manager or financial advisor. (none of whom would have been in the least bit interested in her plight ... primarily because she was down-and-out and had nothing to excite those institutions whose real agenda is to get their hands on as much of 'your' loot as possible) Yet in five years she has accumulated greater wealth than most MBA's, Financial Consultants, and Professors of Economics, bank managers (even a whole bunch of them put together) will earn in their entire lives! ... and that of their children and grandchildren.... It is very strange that exploring and identifying possible ME strategies for earning an income are seldom discussed or even encouraged at schools, universities or financial institutions....even MBA courses. A very recent exception is UJ - University of Johannesburg - which has implemented a program. Congratulations to UJ! Most people, including billionaiore Mark Shuttleworth, who have stumbled into huge Multipliers and become wealthy as a result, did not set out with that goal in mind. It is highly unlikely that either Mark or Joanne had the slightest idea that their very different enterprises would create a multiplier ... real or imagined ... that would propel them to such great wealth. Certain activities have a greater potential than others of achieving this highly desirable outcome. (Most variations of the 'JOB' ...except for those at the top of the corporate pyramid...are at the bottom of the pile) The trick is to identify those opportunities which will be recognized as such by a lot of people. Big ME's are powered by lots of people...usually for a selfish reason: there is something in it for them. Unfortunately most people only see themselves in the picture, not realizing that the more people they help to achieve wealth (or something they may want) the more certain is their own achievment of prosperity ...both spiritual and monetary. Isn't there a clue to getting rich somewhere in there? Yes, there is ...!
Let's examine the important points in Joanne's story?
1. Joanne had a need, a desperate need...to earn more money...or be condemned to a cramped bedsitter for ever. She considered writing a book...and then took the ACTION required to make it happen. She wrote the book. Harry Potter was born! Thought ... plus pen, paper and typewriter were the only raw materials she used.
2. Despite numerous rejections over two years she refused to give up. (perhaps she had no other viable options!) A lesser person (as in: 'not quite as desperate' ... like so many of us who are in a comfort zone even if that 'comfort' is rather uncomfortable|!!!) might well have accepted the negative sentiments of many literary agents and tossed the manuscript in a drawer, or the rubbish bin.
Not Joanne......she persisted ... and that made all the difference!
3. Although Joanne is now enormously successful and rich she did not do it alone. Many people, mostly unknown to her, were part of a purely self (profit) motivated 'team' ... publishers, bookstores etc. who also saw the opportunity to 'cash in' on this phenomenon. Being at the top of this prosperity pyramid Joanne and the publishers took the biggest bite.... a piece of the action from every book sold.
4. It is fair to say that without several key people such as Christopher Little, (this is a case of a Little going a long way to making Joanne rich - I hope he was well rewarded!) and Bloomsbury Publishers, Joanne might still be an unknown struggling single Mom in her miserable bedsitter. But without Joanne all those who also profited would not have done so. I call that a winwin deal....even if some made a great deal more than others.

You may have perceived that Lotteries have a similar pyramidal structure....lots of people contributing a little money so that a (very) few can win a lot and the organizers always win the most.
